Bruce mentioned that the state has moved to Microsoft Teams for interactive online meetings. He had an issue after he downloaded the Teams application, as he was not a member of the the group and has no Microsoft account. He was able to access the meeting through the browser using the method in the document at https://www.endsight.net/blog/join-microsoft-teams-meeting-as-guest-through-a-browser

I mentioned how important Apple security updates are. Apple had just released several essential updates. Since then, Apple released a number of updates that are essential for Apple manufactured devices on May 24. They include: macOS from Mojave (macOS 10.4.x) on (Released 11.4 in Bug Sur), updates for the series 3 or newer Apple Watch, Apple TV (Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD), and iOS devices (iPhone 6s and later, iPad Pro (all models), iPad Air 2 and later, iPad 5th generation and later, iPad mini 4 and later, and iPod touch (7th generation)). If you have not run the updates, you should ASAP.

We talked about ransomware and the effect that is having some major US businesses, like the recent issue with the pipeline feeding the east coast. However, individuals and small businesses are are risk as well. Individual users should take some of the recommendations made for larger business. Regular backups, of data and possibly the operating system (You can install the OS and reinstall the applications and documents), using cloud backup systems, You should also watch installing applications and browser extensions. They should only obtained from reputable sources.

Bruce had some questions about Time Machine. He still getting ready to transition to Catalina on his iMac.

There was a discussion about YouTube ads. They can be stopped by paying a fee to YouTube. There are some free ones, such as the Icelandic volcano Bruce mentioned he and his wife found mesmerizing and a couple of fireplace videos. It seems as though any video (tied through Facebook) over a couple minutes contains a 15 to 20 second ad.

Midge now has a fiber internet internet connection. She was interested in what streaming services they should look into to replace their current satellite services. Hulu, HBO, AMC+, CBS, Paramount+ (with CBS offerings and including WCAX for a local station), HBO, Netflix, and Amazon Prime were all mentioned. Fox, NBC, and ABC offer their own streaming service. It was suggested they start with a service and see how it meets their needs.

The next NVMUG meeting will be a Zoom meeting on June 19 at 10:00 am. There is possibility of meeting face to face in July. We are are however, checking to see how many would be interested in a hybrid meeting after our return to Northeastern Regional Hospital. Please let me know if you are interested in a trial, please let me know.

If you wish to attend, please send me an email by 9:30 am, on that date, so I can send send you an email invitation to the meeting.
