NVMUG July 2022 Meeting Report

NVMUG Meeting 07/16/22

Via Zoom

Present: Stephen Farber, Midge Lubot, Bruce Shields, Jane Fuller, and Geof Gonter

If you wish to attend, please send me an email by 9:30 am, by that date, so I can send you an email invitation to the meeting. The meetings will continue to be online meetings instead of the meeting room at the Northeastern Regional Hospital in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. Right now that looks like it will be hopefully be soon, when we might be able access that location

Cleaning solutions for tech:
If using any cleaning solvent for tech items, make sure the solvent will not affect the plastic in the item, like circuit boards. I have been using contact cleaner I have had for a while from Chesterton (https://chestertonlubricants.chesterton.com/en-us/Products/Pages/296.aspx). But it available only through their distributors. WD40 sells contact cleaner they say is safe (https://www.wd40.com/products/contact-cleaner/). It is supposedly available through Walmart online and locally at Aubuchon Hardware stores and at Fastenal outlets (there is one in Lyndonville). I would recommend testing any product you try, by placing some in a small spot on a rag or paper towel and then on a spot on the plastic surface where there should be no affect.

New Apple security:
Apple will be introducing new security features, starting with iOS 16 and iPadOS 16. The features will be rolled into Ventura for the Mac. An excellent articles a quick explanation on the features to start with is at:
https://www.intego.com/mac-security-blog/new-security-and-privacy-features-in-macos-ventura-ios-16-and-ipados-16/). You may want to do a read to see what is coming from Apple, to protect its users.

Online meeting options:
Discussion about switching to Facetime for the next meeting:
We have lost our continuous Zoom meeting capability as of the last meeting. We talked about trying Facetime, which work, but will not offer us the capability to share screens, mute, or share notes with each other during the meeting on a Mac, without using Messages. It will definitely not work for hybrid meetings, if we want to hold them once we can meet in person. I am looking at using Microsoft Teams. Stephen and I will see how a mock meeting works in the near future.

Lifetime of batteries in headsets and wireless earplugs:
During the meeting a couple of the bone conductive headphones users of the headphones had the batteries run out of power. The only way to charge these devices is using the appropriate cord and plug them into a computer or power supply. Wireless Bluetooth ear plugs are the same, except some that come in charge carrying case, which usually supplies additional power charging.

… The meeting then ended with conversations with the remaining attendees discussing issues unrelated to Apple products.

The next NVMUG meeting will be a Zoom meeting on August 20, 2022 at 10:00 am, unless we find out otherwise. The date for the September meeting will be September 17, 2022. If you need assistance with Zoom, drop me an email and I’ll send you directions.
