NVMUG January 14, Meeting Report
Northern Vermont Macintosh Users Group
Minutes from the NVMUG Meeting – January 14, 2016
Present: Hartley Jackson, Warren Walker, Stephen Farber, Kelly Gonter, Russell Carlson, Bruce Shields, Midge Lubot, and Geof Gonter
The meeting opened with a discussion about the size of parts in the current laptops, screws and plastic parts inside and under the keys. The tips that hold in the smaller keys, function and arrow, are very delicate. One has to be very careful if they are trying to remove them.
Midge asked about Barracuda security that seems to pop up from time to time at the hospital. They are a supplier of firewalls for commercial ventures, but do have a small presence in personal and home protection. The hospital probably utilizes their products.
Midge also asked about several items that have popped up on her computer, primarily Zip Cloud. Geof showed her how to find in in the Finder and then remove it from her computer. It often pops up as an option to install when installing items like Java, Shockwave, and others.
The discussion went on to browser extensions, installing, disabling, and removing them. In Safari one finds the extension management under Safari Preferences. Chrome and Chromium extension management is under Window in the menu bar. Extension management for Firefox is called “Add-Ons” under the Tools in the menu bar.
Russell has an older iPhone and can’t connect with what he thinks the password is. He has to go through Apple to change his password, by going to the original email account to get a text message. Apple responded by saying it would contact him within 24 hours. No report at this time as to whether the issue was resolved.
The next meeting will be on February 11, 2017 in room 224 at the Northeast Regional Hospital. The meeting will start at 10:00 am and end around 12:00 pm.
