NVMUG December 15, 2018 Meeting Report
Northern Vermont Macintosh Users Group
Minutes of the December 15, 2018 NVMUG Meeting
Those attending the meeting were: Bruce Shields, Warren Walker, Bill German, Homer May, Midge Lubot, Richard Lubot, Kathleen Farber, Stephen Farber, Joan Hickey, Kelly Gonter, and Geof Gonter
The meeting was our pretty typical December meeting with goodies provided by some people for all the attendees.
Bill brought several items for the viewing of the members, including an antique cylindrical slide rule. Despite its wear and a small piece missing, it was a very interesting piece to look at. Bill has found some very interesting pieces at the flea markets he attends and items given to him.
There was a discussion of medical plans, as a good number of members present are on Medicare and the deadline for adding or changing policies was recent. The discussion continued on, after the meeting adjourned.
A discussion of the future of the group was held. I posed the problems of a single member being responsible for topics of the meetings, taking the minutes, writing the minutes, and maintaining the website. It is near impossible for one person to do all successfully. Possibilities that were discussed included that monthly meetings continue as is, or the monthly meetings will continue with the possibility of high priority announcements being discussed, or monthly meetings with quarterly meetings, in March, June, September, and December, to discuss topics of special interests/topics. Homer May was volunteered for maintaining the website, which will occur after this posting. It was decided that meetings will continue on a monthly basis, but quarterly meetings with special topics will be held. There will probably be no minutes of the monthly meetings. The dates of the meetings will be on the Facebook page, on the NVMUG website, and sent out via email. Please continue to email me at email@example.com and I will pass the email to the appropriate party.
Questions were raised about email. There was a discussion about changing email addresses/services, unsubscribing from email mailing lists, and email possibilities.
We had a discussion about foreign and domestic manufacturing and how technology has an effect on quality and costs. We wandered into the issues looking forward with imports and tariffs.
We also talked about support for Macs available online and available locally. The Mac User Groups maintain a website at: https://appleusergroupresources.com

If you happen to find one of these bogus emails sent to you, please forward to :
This is “in the blind” … so you will not get a response, but it will help Apple combat these nasties.
Several members, including myself, have received emails saying that a virus has been placed on my computer allowing the person emailing to view and record the sites I have visited and myself viewing the sites. The person threatens that if they are not sent a financial amount in bitcoin, within 48 hours, they will release the recorded items, along with my email contact list, emails, and web browsing history for the world to see. I got my email about this some two plus weeks ago. I ignored it and to my knowledge, nothing has been released to anyone. Please inform me if any of you have received email with the threatened items regarding my actions with my computer . This email was sent to my work email address which is quite public and easily mined by by spiders cruising the the emails of people of people who insist on sending mass mailing emails, using carbon copying individuals instead of using blind carbon copy.
The next meeting will be on January 19, 2019 in the Northeast Regional Hospital in room 224, starting at 10:00 am. There will be no formal presentation. The date of the February meeting is February 16, 2019. The first quarterly formal meeting will be March 16, 2016.
