NVMUG August 2021 Meeting Report
Northern Vermont Macintosh Users Group
August 21, 2021
Meeting Minutes for the Northern Vermont Macintosh User Group
Held via Zoom online
Present - Midge Lubot, Jane Fuller, Neil Raphel, Bruce Shields, Stephen Farber, and Geof Gonter
Midge was exposed to COVID-19. She isolated for 14 days to be safe and cleared the 14 days successfully.
We had a discussion about power generators, the installation and their use. Some asked about them and Bruce relayed the normal way of installing through the electrical panel, with a special switch to transfer the power to the panel. When the rest of the power, not wired in the panel comes on, the main power has returned. The service, from the generator, needs to be connected by a licensed electrician. The electrician can recommend the size of the generator based on the lights and appliances you want to connect to.
Cable TV replacement, cable costs, service apps, and speed were discussed. Neil talked about his son using YouTube for streaming. The merits and costs of some of the services available were talked about. In some cases, the cost is quite high and there is overlap between what is offered by some of the services. If you use the services, local programs, like news, are not always available. One still needs an internet connection to use the streaming services. AMC+ and Discovery+ are recent additions to Apple TV, HULU, Amazon Prime, YouTube, HBO+, Peacock, Sling, and Netflix (And numerous others that would fill the newsletter) in providing programs to watch. Sling and Philo offer some local coverage, but the selections are usually large nearby cities, such as Boston and NYC. I’m not sure what local offerings they provide. Locast, a service that did offer access to service in larger locations, ceased broadcasting after losing a court battle earlier this month.
Stephen talked about his using a cell phone service that reduced his bill. It is Ting.com (https://ting.com), a cell phone service. He said he has yet to not save money over AT&T or Verizon’s monthly fee. Perhaps he can expand on that at a future meeting?
Etrecheck (https://etrecheck.com/ or the Apple Store) received another strong recommendation from Bruce. He used it to trouble shoot an issue with his iMac that had been plaguing him (Mentioned in last month’s minutes (also on the newsletter section of the website.)). He reports his iMac is still problem free.
Stephen recommended Intego VirusBarrier Scanner (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/intego-virusbarrier-scanner/id1200445649?mt=12 or https://www.intego.com/virusbarrier-scanner) for use for a free antivirus for those who want to use one on their computer. Despite this, safe practices while browsing, opening email attachments, and adding your software from safe sites are still the best ways. Since 10.10.x (El Capitan) System Integrity Protection, usually referred to as SIP, is a security feature built into the Mac operating system that’s designed to protect most system locations, system processes, and Kernel Extensions from being written to, modified, or replaced. Unless you are sure of what you are doing, you should not disable it. I run in a Standard account, which means when installing an application, dragging applications to the applications folder, deleting folders/files from protected locations, and running some applications requiring access to the computer, I have to enter my admin credentials. One thing, it does keep in my mind my admin username and password.
We spent some time at the end of the meeting discussing the jobs’ issue.
The next NVMUG meeting will be a Zoom meeting on September 18, 2021 at 10:00 am. The date for the October meeting will be October 16, 2021.
If you wish to attend, please send me an email by 9:30 am, on that date, so I can send send you an email invitation to the meeting. The meetings will continue to be online meetings instead of the meeting room at the Northeastern Regional Hospital in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. Right now that looks like it will not be before November 1, 2021.
