NVMUG April 2021 Meeting Report

April 17, 2021

Meeting Minutes for the Northern Vermont Macintosh User Group

Held via Zoom online

Attendees - Jane Fuller, Stepen Farber, Midge Lubot, and Geof Gonter

Big Sur, who is running it?

Stephen is on an Intel Macbook Pro and is getting used to the differences from Catalina. There are many small changes he is trying to get used to. Getting the second monitor to work consistently is one thing.

Geof is also running it on an Intel Macbook Pro, not his primary computer. The only issue he has, is that although the battery is reported as being normal, the computer shuts off when not plugged in the power and has been set to sleep and requires a start up.

Jane is running it on a new M1 Macbook Air, but has little to report about it.

Midge is going to put it on her Macbook when she gets a chance.

iPhone purchasing - We discussed the features of different iPhones available currently. COVID - Discussion about how all we were doing and vaccination progress.

“Find My” application - Find My network accessory program, which is designed to allow third-party Bluetooth devices to be tracked in the Find My app right alongside your Apple devices, is on all computers running Big Sur that is up to date. It allows you to find all of your Apple devices and remove any devices you no longer have in service and wipe devices if they have been removed from your ownership.

EverWeb (https://www.everwebapp.com/) - Is an application that I am using to redo the NVMUG website. It is very similar to iWeb, but much more powerful. The current program used for the website is 32 bit and I am moving to Catalina or Big Sur on my computers. The issue is moving the site with the new application is there is not a direct transfer. I’ll be redesigning it and deleting all the old copies of the minutes, that are over two years old. The application is free to the person doing the website for the group, but group members get a 50% discount. If you are interested in obtaining EverWeb, please let me know and I will get you the code for the purchasing discount.

I had some issue when I downloaded the application from the Apple User Group newsletter, but a phone call and some chat messages with the developer got me the correct link for the download.

Experience with Apple (AirPod Pro Replacements) - I went over recent experiences obtaining AirPod Pro replacements (Under Apple’s warranty) after the left earpiece died. In the end, they ended up replacing all three pieces to replace as the case was not functioning properly. The replacement Airpods connected with more ease than the original ones that I purchased.

Experience with Hostgator - I signed up with Hostgator to host my website for my business. I started with Wordpress, but decided to go to EverWeb to design my page. When I went to place the files on the server, I was not able to log in. I tried after calling them and having the space set for me, but still was unable to reach the server. It took a second call to undo what the first person, I talked to, to get it straightened out. But, persistence paid dividends. The new site is up at https://3geeztech.com.

Jane asked about Onyx or needed applications to address system issues? I used Onyx early on, but Stephen and I agree that it has become more limited as Apple has improved its operating system. It does offer some abilities (Such as changing the format of screenshots from.png to .jpeg, decreasing/increasing the number of recent items available under the Apple menu, and unhiding/rehiding hidden files on your drive, etc...). Things that can be done in other ways or using terminal to enter command line text, but one does not need to know those methods.

Stephen and I both agree that you should never install MacKeeper. It creates more problems than it fixes. There are other options available, if you have issues, even if you have to backup your drive and do a reinstall of the operating system.

The next NVMUG meeting will be a Zoom meeting on May 15 at 10:00 am. We may know then about the possibility of meeting face to face, but it currently does not look good.

If you wish to attend, please send me an email by 9:30 am, on that date, so I can send send you an email invitation to the meeting. The meetings will continue to be online meetings instead of the meeting room at the Northeastern Regional Hospital in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. Right now that looks like it will not be before July 1, 2021.
