NVMUG April 8, 2017 Meeting Report

Northern Vermont Macintosh Users Group

Minutes from the NVMUG Meeting – April 8, 2017

Present: Stephen Farber, Warren Walker, Mark Chain, Midge Lubot, and Geof Gonter

Geof arrived late and missed all prior discussion held. So the minutes are a bit scant this time around.

Midge was missing an application that was included on her MacBook. When the computer operating system was replaced last fall. Geof had a copy of the application that would allow updating to the newest version, utilizing the App Store. As she had forgotten her USB dongle, she was introduced to the AirDrop feature of the macOS. The application was transferred to her computer for installation. This feature requires the macOS 10.7 (Lion) or above.

Mark has a 2007 MacBook that is running macOS 10.6.8 and wants to update to a newer computer. There many features in 10.6.8 that keep the computer not usable for his purposes, such as outdated browsers. The discussion included differences between the new and older models and finding what software he has installed that will not work with the MacOS since the version his computer is running.

One of the applications Mark is running is Office 2004, which will not run on any macOS since 10.6.8. He likes the fact that the pulldown menus can be customized, as well as the ribbon. The group took a look at Pages and Libre Office to see what they had to offer. He decided to try Libre Office ( https://www.libreoffice.org/ ) as it included the things he was looking for and includes a paint/drawing module that will integrate with the word processing documents. The current version requires macOS 10.8 or above.

The next meeting will be on May 13, 2017 in room 224 at the Northeast Regional Hospital. The meeting will start at 10:00 am and end around 12:00 pm. There will a short discussion about popup blockers, including one that seems to do a better job than some we’ve talked about in the past. We will also attempt to address any questions or issues you have about your idevice or computer. We don’t have all the answers.

At our May meeting, on May 13, we will be raffling off the speakers below. These are quality speakers and have been donated by Hartley Jackson. If you need speakers for your iPhone, iPod, iPad, or computer, these speakers may be for you.
