NVMUG April 18, 2020 Meeting Report
Northern Vermont Macintosh Users Group
Present: Bruce Shields, Midge Lubot, Jane Fuller, Neil Raphel, Stephen Farber, Kelly Gonter, and Geof Gonter
This was our first attempt at an online meeting. I feel it was quite successful. There were some initial issues with some people logging in, but we had up six screens in little time. We used Zoom and all seems to like it, although we had some people who played with their backgrounds during the meeting. Hey, it’s all about experimenting!
1. The meeting was pretty well concentrated around the coronavirus, people’s thoughts, about how they dealing with it, and what we are doing about addressing the problems surrounding living in this somewhat troubled time.
2. Neil was interested in an application that he could use to remote into his mother’s computer from time to time to assist her when she has an issue. Team Viewer and RemotePC were mentioned. Geof mentioned about his experience with Slashtop. Some have costs and offer a low cost options with limited capability. Three free ways to connect to a Mac at no cost are at: https://www.howtogeek.com/180953/3-free-ways-to-remotely-connect-to-your-macs-desktop/
3. Bruce had issues with his Apple Time Capsule when the hard drive in the unit died, but the router section still works. Steven helped him purchase an external USB 2TB drive. He was able to back up his computer, not his wife’s MacBook Pro, as he had with the original time Capsule. I had previously sent him instructions on how to do it with the drive connected to the Time Capsule and to his computer. He reported that he had not yet tried either method.
4. Kelly talked about some of the assistive technology available for use with the iPhone, including using accessibility in settings, to use voice transfer to listening devices, including AirPods and AirPods Pros. They work well together for her.
The meeting continued on with chatter on various items, computer related and personal.
The next NVMUG meeting will be on May 16, 2020 in the Northeast Regional Hospital in room 224, starting at 10:00 am or on Zoom, depending on what occurs with the current closures.
