Quoting the author Kirk McElhearn, “Literature & Latte’s Scrivener is an innovative program for writing fiction, non-fiction, screenplays, and other long form texts. This book helps you start writing your masterpiece with Scrivener, presenting the program’s basic concepts and features, showing you how to get the most our of the program.”

My purpose in reading Take Control of Scrivener 2 was to see if I could learn more about writing a book length article, and to decide whether it would be of interest to other Macintosh user group members who probably do not own the Scrivener program.

Take Control of Scrivener 2 describes how the program works to help you to jump between working on the beginning, end, and middle, to integrate building a character with building a story, to work in chunks and with collections, to organize chunks, and to link chunks to outlines, corkboards, research, and your own writing. We need to know these things to write longer works whether of not we do them in Scrivener.

There are references to other sources of information about writing and tools available.

I had done some research on a subject, but had no idea how i could develop it into something people would read. After reading Take Control of Scrivener 2, I believe the Scrivener program would be a big help but I do not know if I will buy it.

More important, to me, is that I learned enough about the research, organizing, and writing process and the kinds of tools that I would need, so that, without Scrivener, I can continue my research. I can collect chunks of it, draft parts of it. I can keep the parts organized so that it might develop into something.

I suspect that Take Control of Scrivener 2 would be very useful for owners of Scrivener. Kirk McElhearn recommends an interactive tutorial that comes with the program, but adds, “However, I suggest you read at least the rest of this chapter first, at least, before you undertake the tutorial.”

TakeControlbadgeI recommend Take Control of Scrivener 2 for anyone interested in how to go about writing a fiction book, a popular non-fiction book, or other long articles or scripts and would like more information on how to go about it.
