NVMUG January 2022 Meeting Report

January 15, 2022

Meeting Minutes for the Northern Vermont Macintosh User Group

Held via Zoom online

Present - Jane Fuller, Midge Lubot, Stephen Farber, and Geof Gonter and other possible attendees?

I was not able to attend the meeting until after very near the end of it, as I had a previous commitment. I have no notes to use for the minutes, so I will attempt to provide some miscellaneous Apple related information that I have garnered since the last meeting.

Apple is working on ‘Back to the Future’ shoes that will reportedly be self-lacing. The company originally filed the patent in July of 2019. The patent for “footwear having motorized adjustment system and elastic upper” was just granted on January 11, 2022. The idea of tennis shoes with motorized laces achieved cult status after Marty McFly wore them in the classic Back to the Future II film. (From MacWorld UK through OWC’s News Round Up)

Apple is no longer allowing users to stay on iOS 14!

Prior to the iOS 15 announcement, 9to5Mac learned that Apple was working on a new way to deliver alternate security updates to iPhone and iPad users. Apple later confirmed that it would offer security patches for IOS 14 to users who weren’t yet ready to upgrade—apparently, this is no longer the case. The company has since backtracked and is no longer allowing users to stay on iOS 14 with security updates. It has reverted to the traditional method of updates, and users are now forced to install the latest version of the operating system. (From 9to5 through OWC’s News Round Up)

Still think you need Adobe Reader to view or manipulate PDF’s? I haven’t had Adobe Reader installed on my computers since 2015. Preview will allow you to view, annotate, and combine pages in PDFs. A brief article about its use working with selections of PDFs is provided here from OWC’s Rocket Weekly (https://tinyurl.com/3rdxtvcr).

An additional page covering using Preview with PDF’s is https://tinyurl.com/3t6cvxwv.

Looking for a way to make a collage without the fancy software? OWC offers this webpage on how to do it with just Pages and Keynote: https://tinyurl.com/2p97mr76.

If you like these hints/short hints, you might browse on over to OWC’s website and subscribe to the Rocket Weekly newsletter. I think you will find it your worth your time.

The next NVMUG meeting will be a Zoom meeting on February 19, 2022 at 10:00 am. The date for the March meeting will be March 19, 2022.

If you wish to attend, please send me an email by 9:30 am, by that date, so I can send send you an email invitation to the meeting. The meetings will continue to be online meetings instead of the meeting room at the Northeastern Regional Hospital in Saint Johnsbury, Vermont. Right now that looks like it will not be before April 1, 2022.
