NVMUG February 15, 2020 Meeting Report
Northern Vermont Macintosh Users Group
Present: Bruce Shields, Midge Lubot, and Geof Gonter
1. Discussion of scanners - Bruce had a scanner that exhibited an issue with scanning with his old printer. Looks like the bulb was bad and spattering stuff on the bottom of the glass. Not repairable. He got his new Epson V600 last night and scanned one image and was very impressed. Drivers for old scanners may not be available for Midge’s scanner, but Vue-Scan (https://www.hamrick.com) is 64 bit and may make a driver for the scanner. However there is a cost, but there have been free updates over the last four years the schools have been using it.
2. Sending large files - Dropbox, some businesses/services may not accept files from DropBox because of possible malware/viruses.
a) Free Firefox uploads to 2.5 GB and how to use some paid services at https://www.pcmag.com/how-to/how-to-send-large-files-over-the-internet.
b) https://crazytechtricks.com/send-large-files-over-the-internet/ - More possibilities for large file transfer.
c) iCloud - (https://support.apple.com/guide/icloud/share-files-mm708256356b/icloud) Windows users can download shared files without special software on their computers, when shared by that iCloud subscriber. The iCloud user just sends a link to invite the user to the shared folder.
d) Google Drive - If you have a gmail account set up, you can save larger files to your Google Drive. (https://www.itworld.com/article/2693378/send-huge-10gb-email-attachments-with-gmail-and-google-drive.html) (https://support.google.com/drive/answer/37603?hl=en)
3. Delved a little into the history of churches and family histories, picking Bruce’s brain for history. (It’s not always about computers)
