Do Good Design
"Do Good Design" Author: David B. Berman Publisher: New Riders - Distributor: Peachpit Press 180 Pages …. $24.99 ISBN-13: 978-0-321-57320-9 How designers can change the world.
"Do Good Design" is about using design to help repair and improve the world.
It begins with interesting examples with tempting copy and images that are not intended to inform us about the product. They are intended to sell stuff that ends up in landfills. One good example is using a sexy woman to sell water in plastic bottles imported from France that cost more than the price of gasoline.
The back cover says, “Designers can choose what their young profession will be about: inventing deceptions that encourage more consumption or helping repair the world.”
"Do Good Design" endorses the triple bottom line that businesses like Small Dog promote, People, Planet, and Product).
"Do Good Design" is fun reading.
It contains many good sayings in bold print so you will not miss them. It also contains many examples of advertising designs intended to attract and entertain you rather than to inform you about the product. I wish there were more examples of outstanding designs that do good.
Going shopping has only recently become our number one recreation. With limits to growth andglobal warming we need to find better ways to use our time. Maybe "Do Good Design" can help.
